An 86-year-old woman died in hospital on Wednesday night after being struck by a flying railing in a traffic accident in Kowloon Bay, police said.
The woman, surnamed Mak, was hit when a white private car with an Architectural Services Department logo lost control and crashed into a roadside railing on Kai Cheung Road near the Police Auxiliary Headquarters on Tuesday morning. The detached railing struck her as she was waiting to cross the road. A battery from a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department monitor attached to the railing also fell to the ground and caught fire.
The woman was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a coma and died at 11.41pm on Wednesday.
Police arrested the 49-year-old male driver, surnamed Cheng, an employee of a contractor working for the Architectural Services Department, on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. The contractor has suspended the driver and is cooperating with the investigation. The Architectural Services Department has requested a report from the contractor.
The victim lived in Tak Long Estate in Ngau Tau Kok and was known to collect cardboard with a trolley. A neighbour said she was seen on Tuesday.
