Peru’s Maido crowned world’s best restaurant
The annual list, determined by votes from 1,120 international food experts, saw Peru’s innovative Nikkei restaurant Maido ascend to the number one position, while Hong Kong’s Wing and The Chairman achieved their highest placements yet.
Peru’s Maido claimed the coveted top spot after rising from fifth place last year. The Lima-based restaurant has earned global acclaim for its masterful fusion of Japanese techniques and Peruvian ingredients. Spanish grill specialist Asador Etxebarri and Mexico City’s Quintonil rounded out the top three.
Hong Kong’s culinary stars shine bright
Hong Kong’s culinary scene shone brightly with two notable climbers. Modern Chinese restaurant Wing, located in Central, made an impressive leap from 20th to 11th place while also receiving the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award.
Under chef Vicky Cheng’s leadership, Wing has captivated diners with creative interpretations of Chinese cuisine that incorporate French culinary influences.
Equally impressive was The Chairman’s ascent from 26th to 19th position. The beloved Cantonese establishment has built its reputation on time-honored recipes executed with premium local ingredients, with signature dishes like their celebrated steamed flower crab.
Bangkok leads with six entries
Asian restaurants demonstrated particular strength in this year’s rankings, with Bangkok establishments accounting for six of the 14 Asian restaurants on the list. Gaggan led the pack at number six and was named Best Restaurant in Asia. Tokyo’s Sézanne (7th), Singapore’s Odette (25th), and Seoul’s Mingles (29th) also represented the region’s diverse culinary excellence.
Individual honors celebrate culinary greats
The gala also honored individual achievements, with Barcelona’s Albert Adrià receiving the Chefs’ Choice Award, Italian culinary legend Massimo Bottura earning the Woodford Reserve Icon Award, and Parisian pastry maestro Maxime Frédéric being named World’s Best Pastry Chef.
