Nine suspected gang members have been arrested for manslaughter and “affray,”or fighting in public, in connection to the death of a 68-year-old man who died after two groups armed with metal rods clashed in Cheung Sha Wan early Saturday.
The arrestees include five men and four women, aged 27 to 44, who have suspected ties with the 14K triad. One of them, a 39-year-old man, was held on suspicion of manslaughter.
The incident first came to light when police responded to a 3am disturbance report on June 14 about the two groups confronting each other at the intersection of Hing Wah Street and Shun Ning Road, some reportedly armed with long, rigid objects.
Around 70 meters away from the fight scene, officers found an elderly man unconscious near 27 Hing Wah Street. He was pronounced dead at Caritas Medical Centre, with the cause of death pending an autopsy.
According to Sham Shui Po police, both groups involved had triad backgrounds and were confronting each other over a debt dispute. The deceased was merely one of the participants in the brawl and was not directly involved in the debt issue.
Acting Senior Superintendent and Assistant District Commander (Crime) of Sham Shui Po Chan Chi-cheung credited the swift arrests to SmartView, a government CCTV initiative targeting high-crime areas.
Police condemned the violence, warning that such lawless behavior not only endangers those involved but also threatens public safety. Authorities reiterated a zero-tolerance stance toward triad-related activities and vowed to uphold public order.
