In an exhilarating match at the Melrose Claymores event, the Hong Kong women's rugby sevens team clinched their first victory, defeating Kazakhstan with a score of 29:14. The game, which took place on Friday night, featured standout performances, particularly from Chong Ka-yan, who scored two crucial tries.
Chong expressed her elation about her performance, particularly the experience of scoring in front of the South Stand. She compared the vibrant atmosphere to that of a concert, noting the contrast between the noisy surroundings and the quiet moment before her try, which heightened the anticipation of the crowd.
This year marked a significant change for the Hong Kong Sevens, as it was the first time the event was hosted at the new Kai Tak Stadium. Despite the new location, the spirit and enthusiasm traditionally associated with the event remained high.
Chong found the experience both refreshing and familiar. She remarked that playing at the new venue felt rejuvenating, yet it retained the essence of the familiar Sevens atmosphere, with the enthusiastic cheering of the audience as vibrant as ever.
The ambiance was further enhanced by the use of lighting and smoke effects, which made the players' entrance resemble a concert. The laser projection show coincided with the closure of the roof, which amplified the cheers from the crowd. Chong shared her anticipation for the roof's opening the following day, expecting it to add a new dimension to the experience.
Reflecting on her performance, Chong felt she performed well, rating herself between 7 and 8 out of 10. She acknowledged some initial nervousness that allowed Kazakhstan to score first but was pleased with how the team found their rhythm as the game progressed. She admitted there were areas she could improve, such as responding more effectively to her teammates' breakthroughs, accelerating during runs, and applying more defensive pressure on the opponents.
The Hong Kong women's team is set to face Thailand at noon tomorrow, March 28, where they hope to build on today's success and elevate their performance even further.
The Hong Kong Sevens, aside from hosting the titular series matches, also features the Melrose Claymore tournament.
