The playground at Kwun Tong Free Space will be demolished just one year after its completion to facilitate the preparatory underground utility diversion work, prompting criticism from the public.
In a picture shared to a Facebook group, the playground was fenced off and covered with canvas, with some play equipment removed.
Netizens voiced their frustrations regarding the demolition, with many feeling that the construction of the playground was a waste since it had only been open for a brief time.
Kwun Tong District Councilor Marco Ma Yat-chiu stated in a Facebook post that the playground and basketball court have been closed since November for underground pipeline diversion and related works.
In response to inquiries from Sing Tao Headline, Ma explained that the Urban Renewal Authority would begin preparatory work for the underground utilities once the demolition is completed.
He stressed that the Kwun Tong Free Space was intended to be a temporary project and that the site will eventually be developed into a multifunctional landmark, featuring residential units, commercial spaces, hotels, and community facilities.
