At approximately 11 am, in a vacant lot at the entrance of Sheung Yau Tin Tsuen, authorities found a tray containing a halved red apple with a candle and incense inserted, alongside the disturbing sight of a black cat's head and multiple bundles of cat hair.
The police were notified and subsequently enlisted the help of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The cat is preliminarily identified as an adult moggy. The incident is being treated as a case of animal cruelty, though no arrests have been made yet.
The tray was positioned near a yellow gate, with the cat's head measuring about 12 centimeters. The scene suggested elements of a ritual, indicated by the arrangement on the tray and the surrounding area.
According to the decomposition of the cat's head, it is believed that the cat had died recently.
Residents near the site reported that the area had previously been considered safe and there had been no prior incidents of animal abuse. They noted that the neighborhood is home to several moggy cats.
Animal sacrifice rituals have been reported globally, and similar incidents have occurred in Hong Kong. In 2021, a young woman engaged a college student, who claimed to be a fortune teller, to perform rituals involving rabbits, white mice, and other small animals in an attempt to alter her romantic fortunes.
The student and three female clients were arrested and charged with nine counts of cruelty to animals. The student was sentenced to a rehabilitation center, while the first female client who pleaded guilty received 120 hours of community service. The other two female clients were also sentenced to 120 hours of community service each.
