A new brand -- SKYTOPIA -- of the Airport City development blueprint was officially unveiled on Thursday, marking the Airport Authority’s strong desire to develop the place into a world-class destination.
The SKYTOPIA will be a new landmark showcasing the development potential and investment opportunities near Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). It also covers art, popular culture, art trading, entertainment and leisure to offer both refined and well-heeled as well as vibrant and fun-seeking.
The name SKYTOPIA embodies the attributes and hopes of the development, with SKY and IA manifesting its airport lineage and global reach, while TOP aims to provide visitors with top-tier experiences and underscores its position as a leading regional landmark.
The authority’s chairman, Fred Lam Tin-fuk, said: “Our vision is to develop ‘SKYTOPIA’ into a landmark of its own, and a world-leading destination, attracting visitors from within Hong Kong and the prosperous Greater Bay Area, as well as major markets in Asia and the rest of the world.”
The details come after the authority’s decision in October last year to more than double the scale and raise its investment to HK$100 billion.
Lam stated that the airport’s three-runway system is now fully operational, increasing the airport capacity by 50 percent, allowing it to serve 120 million passengers and handle 10 million tons of cargo annually.
He also mentioned that the vision and development plan for the SKYTOPIA is based on a substantial passenger foundation, connecting to the nearly 90 million people in the Greater Bay Area through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Cissy Chan Ching-sze, Executive Director for Commercial, stated that of the HK$100 billion investment, approximately HK$30 billion will be allocated for infrastructure, which will be borne by the Airport Authority.
