According to Ming Pao, a mainland student at the university was detained by immigration authorities last year on suspicion of overstaying a student visa.
In response to an inquiry, the university declined to comment on individual cases. However, it emphasized the importance for students to understand and comply with Hong Kong's visa regulations.
The institution also reminded non-local students to maintain valid student visas during their studies.
The Immigration Department, meanwhile, confirmed that a case of overstayed student visas was identified in October last year, currently under investigation.
Following the news, the university was said to have taken steps to address the situation.
Sources suggested that letters have been sent to 934 non-local students who failed to submit their student visa records to the university.
Failure to comply will result in the immediate suspension of their student privileges, including access to dormitories and library facilities, according to sources.
