Hong Kong’s Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan Mei-po said a proposed 7-kilometer smart and green mass transit system in East Kowloon will have its route changed to add the Lam Tin North station.
Authorities earlier proposed building the elevated mass transit system from Choi Hung East to Yau Tong East by 2033.
The transport chief told a newspaper interview published on Friday that authorities are looking to modify the route to enable the construction of a ninth station, to serve people living in the northern part of Lam Tin - including those at Tak Tin Estate, Hing Tin Estate, and Lam Tin Estate.
"The Lam Tin to Yau Tong route would require extensive excavation through mountains and rocks to build a very long tunnel, which would be both complex and costly. Many Lam Tin residents would be unable to benefit from the system," she said.
"However, we found that shifting the route slightly leftward would bring it closer to the Lam Tin North area, where three housing estates with over 30,000 residents are located. We have identified potential locations in this area to build a station."
Chan said authorities maintain an open attitude towards the planning scheme and intend to explain the proposed changes to residents and concerned groups subsequently.
