The Central People's Government has approved the appointment of Chan Tsz-tat as the new Commissioner of Customs and Excise, following the nomination by Chief Executive John Lee. Chan, previously the Deputy Commissioner, replaces Louise Ho Pui-shan, who has commenced pre-retirement leave after 33 years of service.
John Lee praised Chan's 30 years of dedication to the department, highlighting his extensive experience and strong leadership skills. He expressed confidence in Chan's ability to steer the department through future challenges.
Louise Ho, who has served as Commissioner since October 2021, was commended for her efforts in combating smuggling, protecting government revenue, and enhancing narcotics detection. Lee acknowledged her role in reinforcing Hong Kong's status as a key international trade and logistics hub, thanking her for her significant contributions and wishing her a pleasant retirement.
Chan, 54, began his career in the department in 1994 as an inspector and has since accumulated a wealth of frontline experience. He played a pivotal role during the pandemic, coordinating customs operations for the lockdown in 2022 and preparations for the reopening of the mainland border.
Promoted to Assistant Commissioner in 2019, Chan took charge of intelligence and investigation in 2020 and was elevated to Deputy Commissioner in 2021. He has been instrumental in promoting the youth engagement program, Customs YES, actively participating in its activities, including voluntary works and site visits.
