A private car was suspected of losing control and crashing onto a busy pavement in Yau Ma Tei on Monday morning, causing the death of an elderly man and injuries to two other pedestrians.
The incident occurred around 10.07 am while the car was driving along Jordan Road when it suddenly lost control and mounted a pedestrian path near Shanghai Street.
Surveillance camera footage showed the car first striking a woman who fell outside a restaurant causing injuries to her feet. The car then continued to rush forward and hit a male pedestrian on the left, injuring his head. Meanwhile, an elderly man on the right was also struck.
The car finally stopped after crashing into the central road barrier, leaving the guardrail on the pedestrian path completely smashed down.
The elderly man was found unconscious and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The other two injured individuals were also taken to the same hospital, while the driver, who reported feeling unwell, was sent to Kwong Wah Hospital.
Police are still investigating the cause of the incident and have not ruled out the possibility that the car may have run a red light.
After an investigation the 42-year-old driver surnamed Cheung was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
