The government aims to attract more mainland visitors to compensate for the declining average spending per overnight stay, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun said.
Wong noted that the average spending of mainland tourists per overnight stay was recorded at HK$5,250 in the third quarter, a decline from over HK$6,000 during the same period last year.
However, the number of non-mainland visitors to Hong Kong has risen by over 20 percent in the past three to four months, and their spending has also increased compared to 2018.
Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board Dane Cheng Ting-yat expressed optimism about the number of visitors next year, as the long-haul flight market is growing steadily.
Separately, Wong mentioned that the drone shows organized by the Tourism Board by the end of this year will adopt Shenzhen's approach to reduce the density of drones, aiming to avoid cancellations due to signal disruptions.
