Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho stated that the objective of developing yacht tourism is to attract high-end consumers and facilitate direct access for overseas visitors to sail into Hong Kong.
This comes after the Policy Address proposed utilizing the the expansion area of Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, the ex-Lamma Quarry area and the development of the waterfront site in the vicinity of the Hung Hom Station to promote yacht tourism.
Speaking at the panel on development in the Legislative Council, Linn said each location is expected to accommodate 100 to 200 berthing spaces.
She noted that the location would also equipped with ancillary facilities, including water sports amenities, yacht repair and maintenance services, as well as dining establishments.
She revealed the Ex-Lamma Quarry Area will be transformed into a leisure area with Tsim Bei Tsui and Pak Nai as highlights to promote ecological tourism.
Linn clarified that the goal of developing yacht tourism is to attract affluent consumers who travel to Hong Kong on their vessels or are interested in purchasing their yachts, but not promote tourism centered around yachts.
Regarding concerns on the supporting infrastructure for yacht tourism, Linn confirmed that the Airport Authority is working on yacht facilities at the airport, with plans available next year.
