The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has charged a former director of an electronics assembly equipment manufacturer and a merchant for allegedly accepting more than HK$6 million in bribes over a deal.
It is alleged that the 49-year-old defendant Lau Wai-leung, a former sales director of ASMPT Hong Kong Limited, assisted a technology firm in being selected as the electronics assembly equipment distributor by accepting bribes from a firm's shareholders.
The alleged offenses occurred between January 2019 and January 2023, while another defendant, a 46-year-old merchant Terry Wong Yuk-yan, acted as a middleman.
The investigation found that the shareholder had promised to offer Lau bribe money equivalent to 20 percent of the firm's sales profit as a reward.
Since the technology firm was engaged as a distributor, it had sold over 1,000 sets of the manufacturer's equipment, involving bribes amounting to a total of over HK$6 million.
Leung and Wong jointly face one count of conspiracy for an agent to accept advantages, and they will appear at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts on Thursday (Oct 3) for plea.
