The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) announced on Wednesday that they are following up on the illegally discharged sewage in Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter and have ensured enforcement action on whoever violated the law.
This came after a photo of the sea around Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter with the water appearing milky white circulated on the internet yesterday (Sep 25), raising concerns about the pollution of the sea water.
When the EPD responded to inquiries, it confirmed that sewage had been illegally discharged, and is currently investigating channels with the Drainage Services Department to determine the source.
The EPD stated that after receiving the relevant report yesterday afternoon, it immediately dispatched personnel to the typhoon shelter to conduct on-site investigations.
There were no dead fish at the scene, and the pH and dissolved oxygen levels were normal. However, white-colored sewage was seen discharging from the storm drain outlet near Victoria Park Road.
After analyzing the canal map of the area, it is initially suspected that the source of illegal discharge may originate from the upper reaches of the Causeway Bay area.
EPD staff have taken water samples from the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter for further testing and are working with the Drainage Services Department to inspect relevant channels upstream of Causeway Bay to trace the source of illegal sewage.
The EPD emphasized that although the source cannot be determined at present, it will continue to follow up on the investigation.
If it is confirmed that there is a violation of the Water Pollution Control Ordinance, law enforcement actions will be taken against those involved.
