A humble beginning: Daniel’s journey to CEO
Daniel’s unusual path to becoming CEO of Digital Domain has enabled him to gain diverse experiences across continents. Born in Kuala Lumpur, brought up in Taiwan, and having lived in cities like Beijing, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles, Daniel benefited from this wide exposure that has stood him in good stead to navigate different cultural environments. These relocations presented challenges, but they also fostered adaptability and empathy, which are now core tenets of his leadership style.
Daniel credits his upbringing for shaping his perspective of the world. From a young age, he grappled with questions of identity due to his multiple affiliations: “Where am I from?” he often wondered. While this internal conflict caused discomfort, it ultimately became his strength. Daniel learned to appreciate various views and used this knowledge to lead an international team successfully. His approach has always been grounded in respecting different cultures and uniting global teams under a shared vision.
Inspiration from mentors and personal growth
Throughout his journey, Daniel encountered many mentors who played pivotal roles in his development. He especially highlights the profound influence of Stan Lee, the legendary creator of Marvel Comics, who has continued to visit Digital Domain well into his 90s, inspiring his enthusiasm for creativity and innovation.
Daniel also believes that a successful leader must be a good listener who respects his teammates and empathizes with their thoughts. He emphasizes collaboration and humility, viewing himself as a facilitator rather than a traditional CEO. “I don’t always see myself as the CEO; instead, I consider myself more of a team leader, guiding the team to work and grow together as a unified unit,” he muses.
Keys to Digital Domain’s global success
Digital Domain has expanded its footprint across the globe within 12 years of Daniel’s leadership. He attributes the company’s success to a united management team and strong shareholder support. The company’s resilience, even in challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, is a testament to their adaptability.
One key to the company’s growth has been their early investment in AI technology when others are only making a start. Digital Domain has been at the forefront of integrating machine learning and deep learning into their projects. Their pioneering work in movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Beauty and the Beast showcased their ability to blend real-time performance capture with advanced technology.
For example, for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel enlisted Digital Domain to create Thanos, portrayed by Josh Brolin. The studio delivered nine key sequences featuring the iconic supervillain, contributing to over 40 minutes of screen time across 513 finalized shots by more than 340 artists. Their work encompassed pivotal scenes, including the Ark Ship Massacre and the End Battle in Wakanda.
To capture Thanos’s performance, the team utilized motion capture technology integrated into the live-action set, allowing Brolin to deliver a natural portrayal. This meticulous approach earned them Oscar nominations.
In addition to their accomplishments in the film industry, Digital Domain has also ventured into Virtual Reality (VR), producing award-winning VR content and collaborating with global brands like Nike and artists like Taylor Swift. These projects have cemented Digital Domain’s reputation as an innovative leader in both entertainment and AI virtual human technology.
Expanding its role to various sectors
Digital Domain’s AI virtual human technology is not limited to visual effects and entertainment. The company is actively expanding AI virtual human applications across multiple sectors, including education, hospitality, and elder care. Daniel envisions AI virtual human as a tool that can enhance human experiences, whether through virtual companions, customer service representatives, or interactive learning platforms.
“I believe that automation of AI virtual human and its capacity for human interaction are crucial aspects that can not only enhance operational efficiency but also make processes more enjoyable and engaging,” Daniel observes. For instance, the idea of celebrities like Brad Pitt offering language lessons, and virtual bank tellers like Teresa Teng making interactions more delightful, exemplify Daniel’s belief that AI virtual human presents unlimited scope to revolutionize daily life in the future.
From Hong Kong and Los Angeles to the world
A critical part of Digital Domain’s strategy has been its global expansion plans, and Daniel has been instrumental in guiding the company through this process. The company has successfully established offices in various regions, including Hyderabad, Greater China, and Montreal. A significant reason for their success in these markets has been their commitment to partnering with local talent. Rather than imposing their own methods, Digital Domain integrates with the local workforce and culture, which has allowed them to build strong relationships and establish a lasting presence.
In particular, Daniel points to the success of their Hyderabad studio, which has become one of their most profitable global studios. He shares: “By trusting local teams and adapting to regional needs, the company has been able to maintain high standards of quality while expanding their global reach.”
Looking ahead: A future shaped by AI
As Digital Domain continues to grow, Daniel has ambitious plans for its future. He views AI as the next industrial revolution, with the potential to transform industries and reshape the global economy. While AI will inevitably replace some jobs, Daniel emphasizes that the technology should be seen “as a tool for enhancing productivity and creating new opportunities.”
The company’s recent decision to establish a Research & Development Center at Hong Kong Science Park reflects their commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation. The center will focus on advancing AI technology and virtual human development, paving the way for new applications in fields such as healthcare and education.
Daniel is pleased with the many talents he has met in Hong Kong, and by providing them with a platform to thrive and shine, he aims to nurture a host of stars of tomorrow. “We note the enormous efforts and investment the Hong Kong government has invested in promoting technological development,” Daniel concludes. “In creating this center of excellence, we shall be collaborating closely with interested parties to advance and expand the use of AI technology, ultimately helping transform the city into a global technology hub.”
