Some 40 imported construction workers for the United Christian Hospital expansion project, who had protested against salary exploitation and were subsequently fired, have now been reinstated.
The Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union chairman Chau Sze-kit confirmed the news on Thursday and added that the main contractor committed to improving their monitoring of the situation.
This comes after approximately 30 imported workers protested outside the construction site on Monday (Sept 9) over the alleged salary exploitation by the project's subcontractor, and they were later dismissed.
Speaking on a radio show, Chau said the imported workers' documentation and bank accounts have been set up to ensure direct payment from the employer.
Chau emphasized that the management company had no authority to dismiss the workers and assured that the direct employer would supervise the company's management of the workers' accommodation and transportation to prevent further exploitation.
The Hospital Authority said earlier that it is aware of the labor dispute and has instructed the main contractor to properly manage the dispute with its subcontractor to resolve the conflict and protect the concerned workers' interests.
