Several workers were seen hanging a banner at Fo Tan on Tuesday morning after their salaries, totaling approximately HK$1 million, were withheld for two months.
At 9.09 am today, about 20 workers displayed a banner with slogans demanding payment and expressing their grievances over working hard without receiving their dues. They also laid down bamboo to block the road as a form of protest to claim their unpaid wages.
The security guard at Sui Wo Court contacted the police, who arrived to mediate the situation. Subsequently, the workers proceeded to the labor department to file a claim and recover what is owed.
It is understood that the workers, who were pursuing their unpaid wages, were employed by a subcontractor. They were tasked with repairing the outer walls of the building and performing miscellaneous cleaning tasks but were not paid the owed amount of around HK$1 million.
During the protest, the road opposite the Sui Wo Court Bus Terminus was obstructed by various items, leading to significant traffic congestion.
The situation was resolved peacefully only after the police had intervened. The workers then removed the obstacles and vacated the area.
The Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union has expressed its concern over the incident. The union has urged the affected workers to get in touch and is advocating for both labor and management to engage in effective communication to resolve the issue promptly.
