The MTR Corporation, Hong Kong’s railway operator, announced on Wednesday it will begin accepting applications for the “MTR Student Travel Scheme” in the new academic year starting tomorrow, with a new option for “Student Mobile Octopus” introduced this year.
The scheme offers eligible students concessionary fares at approximately half price per
trip year-round.
The MTR said apart from submitting the applications online via the Scheme's website or the MTR Mobile app, a new option - “Student Mobile Octopus” - will make the application process even more convenient.
Starting this academic year, eligible students can choose to use “Student Mobile Octopus”
directly when submitting new applications online.
After receiving the confirmation email from Octopus, students can add the "Student Mobile Octopus" to their mobile phone via the Octopus App and then enjoy the student concessionary fares right away, without having to wait for about a week for a physical Octopus card.
Previously, eligible students could only transfer their Student Octopus to their mobile phone after receiving the physical card.
Currently, about 70,000 students benefiting from the “MTR Student Travel Scheme” are using "Student Mobile Octopus" for a more convenient travel experience, the MTR added.
