The hydrogen double-decker departed from Wah Fu Bus Terminus in the afternoon today, bound for Sha Tin Station, traversing through Route 170, which is the only franchised bus route in Hong Kong and features the city’s three toll tunnels - Aberdeen Tunnel, Cross-Harbour Tunnel, and Lion Rock Tunnel.
This is the first time a hydrogen bus has traversed the Hong Kong Island and New Territories route.
Richard Hall, the managing director of Citybus, stated that they will no longer purchase diesel buses but replace them with hydrogen buses on a one-for-one basis.
The goal is to use hydrogen or electric buses in its entire fleet by 2045.
Edward Lau Kwok-fan, chairman of the Legislative Council Panel on Environmental Affairs, said that the cost of hydrogen buses is as high as HK$8 million, and he urges the government to advance relevant regulations and technical standards as soon as possible.
He believes that as long as applications and demand increase, mass production costs can be reduced to HK$5 million or less.
