The MTR Corp’s first electric bus made its debut on route K54 on Saturday, traveling between Wo Ting Estate, Sin Hong station, and Tuen Mun Town Center, as excited fans had been waiting for the first departure as early as 5 am.
The new electric bus reduces carbon emissions by over 60 percent and runs more quietly compared to a traditional diesel bus. It also offers a comfortable and eco-friendly ride to passengers with thoughtful interior design and spacious seats, the MTR said.
When the bus brakes, the electric bus – equipped with an energy regenerative braking system – can convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy which is then fed back to power the onboard facilities, further enhancing battery performance.
The use of an electric-motor reduces the energy consumption of running the engine during idle periods, making them suitable for feeder bus routes with frequent passenger pick-ups and drop-offs, the train giant added.
Although the first departure was scheduled at noon, some of the fans had been waiting as early as 5 am. As the departure time approached, over 100 fans eagerly gathered outside Siu Hong station.
A male student, Ching, hoped to experience a quiet ride with nice air-conditioning, saying the bus is a new energy vehicle and at the same time the MTR’s first electric bus.
Another citizen, Lam, said he came this time also because this is the MTR’s first electric bus. He also recalled that he missed the first ride when KMB introduced its first electric bus.
“The corporation previously received funding from the New Energy Transport Fund of the Environment and Ecological Bureau to purchase the first electric bus and install charging facilities,” the MTR said.
“With the first electric bus commencing service today, the corporation will further expand the electric bus fleet to gradually replace traditional diesel buses. The plan is to introduce at least 30 electric buses by the end of 2026 and increase charging facilities.”
