Police have arrested a 13-year-old boy after he was caught on camera dangerously driving a motorcycle while “threading the needle” through traffic on a busy road in Yuen Long with another boy riding as a passenger.
Police said they recently came across a video showing a boy twice driving a motorcycle on Castle Peak Road in Yuen Long and Shui Che Kwun Street last Friday. During the journey on Castle Peak Road, another boy was a passenger aboard the motorcycle, police added.
After an in-depth investigation by the New Territories North traffic unit, officers arrested the 13-year-old around 7:40 pm in Yuen Long on Monday.
He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving without a license, driving without third-party insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, riding the motorcycle on the pedestrian pavement, not wearing a helmet himself, and allowing the passenger to ride without a helmet.
The boy was subsequently released on bail and must report back to the police in early May.
Many netizens criticized the teen online for his lack of safety awareness after the videos circulated, showing him driving in flip-flops, without a helmet, without headlights at night, and running a red light.
However, the underage motorcyclist soon responded to relevant news reports online, saying: "Do you think I'll be afraid?" He also uploaded a picture of the motorcycle.
