The operation targeted a group known for preying on vehicles parked in secluded areas or seizing opportunities left by distracted delivery drivers.
The suspects, four men and one woman aged between 31 and 53, were apprehended on charges including vehicle theft and driving without a valid license.
According to the West Kowloon Regional Crime Unit, the group is believed to be responsible for 14 thefts across the West Kowloon and Tsuen Wan districts.
Investigators recovered one stolen motorcycle during the raid, along with helmets, clothing, and tools used during the crimes.
Three of the men remain in custody and are expected to face formal charges at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts this coming Monday.
Senior Inspector Fu Ho-shing revealed that the breakthrough followed an intensive investigation involving the analysis of extensive CCTV footage, including data from the "Project Eyewitness" surveillance network. The syndicate operated with clear roles: while some members acted as lookouts, others used blunt instruments to force ignition locks. In several instances, the thieves targeted delivery workers who had left their engines running while making drop-offs. Once stolen, the bikes were moved to hidden locations to await buyers.
Police noted that the group specifically targeted back alleys and poorly lit streets lacking surveillance, which initially complicated the investigation.
Following the crackdown, authorities are urging motorcycle owners to bolster their vehicle security.
Recommendations include installing anti-theft alarms and GPS tracking devices, using wheel locks, and avoiding the common mistake of storing spare keys under the seat.
Drivers are also encouraged to use legal, well-lit parking facilities equipped with security cameras rather than leaving vehicles in isolated spots.
