This came as Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced in his policy address that the city’s District Youth Community Building Committees will be taking point in setting up photo-worthy spots across the 18 districts, with each spot distinctive and of local characteristics.
Characterized by its rosy cheeks, abnormally huge head, and stick-like limbs, QUBY was created by a mainland designer for the popular instant messaging platform WeChat. Sticker packs of the character were commonly used to spread joy.
The Sai Kung District Office believed that the cute and optimistic look of QUBY could resonate with office workers in the city.
District Officer Kathy Ma King-fan, also Chairman of the Sai Kung District Council, said her office has discussed with a mainland company over the construction of the statue. However, she did not disclose the cost for the construction, only describing it as a "reasonable price." She also said the statue is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year.
Commenting on the proposal, district councilor Li Ka-yan suggested incorporating elements unique to Sai Kung, such as designs related to the Tin Hau Festival to promote the distinctive culture of the area.
