Beginning next year, the daily capacity will increase to 1,000 total guests. They will gain access to the new attractions in the previously restricted Chung Ying Street Garden area. Features include a viewing deck overlooking the border, a replica vintage railway station, and a miniature train.
Other cultural highlights covered in the expanded access include the Fish Lantern Square with lantern dance displays and historical scenes. An old fire station preserving its original look and murals depicting traditional activities in the district will also be open to visitors.
The new attractions aim to give a richer sense of Sha Tau Kok's unique history and culture. Security officials say travelers can apply through the Hong Kong Police online platform for free electronic permits on a first-come basis. Applications for the January trips are now open, with subsequent months' quotas released on the first of each.
Licensed tour agencies are another means for the public to participate, as they will handle all necessary permit applications for organized tours to the border region. The ramped-up access is expected to provide more opportunities to experience this unique part of Hong Kong's heritage and border landscape.
