Police have launched citywide patrols starting today to combat jaywalking or other traffic offenses, with plainclothes cops being deployed to slap jaywalkers with HK$2,000 fixed penalty tickets.
The campaign came after the force recorded a total of 85 fatal traffic accidents from January to October, the highest number since 2020, with 56 pedestrians dying.
Starting today, officers - including plainclothes cops - will issue tickets without warning to those who fail to abide by traffic signals, climb over roadside fences, or endanger their own or other's safety when crossing the road.
Offenders will be fined up to HK$2,000, according to Road Traffic (Traffic Control) Regulations.
The force had launched a three-week citywide enforcement action in August and September to combat pedestrians and drivers who violate traffic regulations, with nearly 1,800 pedestrians being fined.
