Customs announced on Thursday that they had busted the smuggling of about 29,000 suspected counterfeit goods and about 34 liters of suspected duty-not-paid liquor with a total estimated market value of about HK$5.8 million on November 14.
Through a risk assessment, the customs inspected a 40-foot container declared to be carrying clothes, mobile phone cases, and footwear arriving in Hong Kong from Nansha, Guangdong, at the Tuen Mun River Trade Terminal Customs Cargo Examination Compound on November 14.
After inspection, Customs officers found a batch of suspected duty-not-paid liquor and suspected counterfeit goods, including wristwatches, mobile phone cases, mobile phone accessories, and clothes, hidden within the container.
The items seized had a total estimated market value of about HK$5.8 million and a duty potential of about HK$90,000.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the batch of suspected duty-not-paid liquor and suspected counterfeit goods would be transshipped to overseas regions.
An investigation is ongoing.
Customs spokesman said that they will continue to combat smuggling activities and cross-boundary counterfeit goods activities, as well as illicit liquor activities, by intercepting the source to protect revenue, with stringent enforcement action based on risk assessment and intelligence analysis.
