Customs have seized about 8,400 counterfeit goods and about 260 liters of duty-not-paid liquor worth HK$11 million, with a duty potential of about HK$260,000.
The seizure came on October 4 as customs inspected a 40-foot container arriving from Nansha, Guangdong at the Tuen Mun River Trade Terminal cargo examination compound after risk assessment.
Although the container was declared to be carrying mobile phone accessories, footwear and daily necessities, officers found the batch of suspected duty-not-paid liquor and suspected counterfeit goods, including mobile phones, mobile phone parts, earphones and watches therein upon inspection.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the batch of suspected duty-not-paid liquor and suspected counterfeit goods would be transshipped to overseas regions.
Customs said the investigation is ongoing and they will continue to combat smuggling activities and cross-boundary counterfeit goods activities.
Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person who imports or exports any goods to which a forged trademark is applied commits an offense.
The maximum penalty carries a HK$500,000 fine and five years’ imprisonment.
