Hong Kong men’s football team achieved their best result by finishing fourth at the Asian Games in Hangzhou despite losing 4-0 to Uzbekistan in the bronze medal match on Saturday.
Uzbekistan opened the scoring minutes before the end of the first half as forward Alisher Odilov cut into the penalty box and fired a shot that hit the back of the net.
Khusain Norchaev further extended the lead as he scored twice four minutes after half-time and in the 59th minute.
Alibek Davronov then sealed the bronze medal for Uzbekistan after scoring a fourth in the 75th minute.
Although Hong Kong didn’t proceed to the final after losing also 4-0 to Japan, the team still made history at the Asian Games by finishing fourth as their best run.
Today’s match also marked the third time Hong Kong fought against Uzbekistan as the two sides already met each other twice in the group stage. Hong Kong lost 1-0 and 2-1 respectively.
