The observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 10.30 am on Friday and the public is reminded to take precautions and stay away from watercourses.
The Amber Warning Signal means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30 millimeters in an hour, and is likely to continue.
As of 11.05 am, rain is particularly heavy in North District of the New Territories, with more than 70 millimeters of hourly rainfall fallen or expected to fall and may cause serious flooding.
There will be flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas and heavy rain may bring about flash floods.
Citizens should listen to radio or watch television for traffic conditions and further announcements on the rainstorm.
