The summer holidays are the best time for outdoor activities that involve being at the beach or on the water. Timed to perfection, a sports training camp in Stanley has reopened following redevelopment, offering a wide range of fun water sports facilities and equipment for the public. Sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddle and pedal kayak are among a host or aquatic adventures the centre offers.
The camp, operated by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), was given an extensive makeover with funding support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and is renamed the “HKFYG Jockey Club Stanley Outdoor Training Camp”. Its new four-storey accommodation block has more beds than the previous iteration and is expected to accommodate about 20,000 guests a year. Around 49,000 people will likely benefit from camp’s water sports activities annually, according to the organisers.
The camp is organising various experiential programmes and water sports activities with support from the Jockey Club, including a free sport training programme for the underprivileged. Participants will be paired with youth volunteers to promote physical fitness and social inclusion. Meanwhile, the camp’s three-year HKFYG Jockey Club “GoActive” Water Sports Project aims to promote youngsters’ whole-person development and cultivate positive thinking.
Sports and culture is one of the key priority areas of the Jockey Club’s charity strategy. The Club is a long-term partner of the HKFYG and other community organisations, sharing its commitment to developing young people and promoting the enjoyment of sports. The Club’s support for these projects, like all of its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate tax and charity support for the community.
