Hong Kong ranks highly on the global scale for life expectancy. However, it is also home to a growing number of chronic disease patients as the population ages. This is where integrated rehabilitation services can play an important role, providing patients with a full range of treatments they need to make a quick recovery – all under one roof.
The Jockey Club Integrated Rehabilitation Day Centre, supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, held its opening ceremony recently with an expansion of an existing facility at Kowloon Hospital. The centre provides one-stop service for a range of treatments via its team of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. Through this collaborative concept, team members could tailor personalised rehabilitation programmes based on patients' individual abilities and needs. The concept has the added benefit of saving patients and their caregivers, the time it would take travel for different treatments. In addition, the centre plans to boost medical-social collaboration by working with neighbourhood non-governmental organisations to provide patients with services that could help them rejoin the community more easily.
Taking its cue from smart hospitals, the centre’s extension is equipped with a range of smart technologies, including AI robots and virtual-reality training equipment, to provide targeted rehabilitation treatments for patients who have suffered from strokes, brain injuries, or had hip joint surgery. The treatments include physiotherapy, occupational therapy and cognitive training.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has always been giving its staunch support to the development of Hong Kong's health services by striving to create a healthy community over the years, and helping citizens obtain more comprehensive healthcare services, particularly on primary, palliative and hospice care. The Club’s support for this project, like all of its charity donations, is made possible by its unique integrated business model through which racing and wagering generate tax and charity support for the community.
