Over 120 residents evacuated from Oi Kan House at Tsz Oi Court, Tsz Wan Shan on Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out from a flat on the 13/F.
A 20-year-old man was rescued by firefighters. An 88-year-old woman and her 31-year-old helper felt unwell after inhaling the smoke and were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The blaze broke out at around 1.22 pm today and burned fiercely. Heavy smoke billowed out of the flat and darkened the exterior wall of the upper floors.
Firefighters soon arrived and deployed two jets to spray water at the burning flat. The fire was put out about three hours later.
Many residents evacuated onto the ground floor and waited at a badminton court nearby.
Residents living on the upper floors said they couldn’t go down the stairs due to the smoke and headed up to the rooftop on the 35/F. Firefighters later came and took them down by taking the lift.
Some said they only realized there was a fire after they heard the sound of concrete falling off and smelled smoke. They thought the alarm was ringing because someone was trapped in the lift.
The Fire Services Department reminded citizens to stay calm. Those affected by the smoke and an unusual odor carried by the wind are advised to close their doors and windows.
