The Legislative Council on Wednesday approved the bill adjusting the tolls for the three cross-harbor tunnels, which aims to divert traffic flow during peak hours and encourage drivers to use the tunnels outside of peak time slots.
Under the new arrangements, the toll for private cars using the Western Harbour Crossing will be reduced by 20 percent to HK$60, while the toll for using the Cross-Harbour Tunnel and the Eastern Harbour Crossing will be adjusted to HK$30.
Taxi toll for the three tunnels will be charged at a flat rate of HK$25 all day. The new charge will come into effect on August 2.
The bill also included the details of the time-varying toll plan to be implemented at the three tunnels later this year. The toll for private cars is between HK$20 and HK$60, while motorcyclists will pay between HK$8 and HK$24. The cross-harbor taxi toll remains an all-day fixed toll of HK$25, with other commercial vehicles, including goods vehicles and buses, charged an all-day fixed toll of HK$50.
The government welcomed the bill's passage by the Legislative Council and added that it would enable a significant step forward in rationalizing cross-harbor traffic.
