One of the city’s oldest dim sum restaurants, Lin Heung Tea House, bid farewell to patrons as it announced today that it shut down on August 8, 2022.
The eatery’s parent company Hong Kong Lin Heung Group post said in a social media post today that the iconic tea house, located in Central, was closed, along with the Lin Heung Tsan in Tsuen Wan.
It is said from the statement that the reason for two restaurants’ ceasing operations stemmed from the “pressure of the epidemic.”
The ninety-five-year-old teahouse, formerly the Guangzhou Cake Shop, was opened in 1927. In the statement, the group expressed its gratitude for the support of customers.
“It is with regret that we have to announce to cease the operations of the two restaurants,” it said, “however, the restaurant of Lin Heung Kui in Sheung Wan will continue to stand.”
Notices were also pasted on the showcase of Lin Heung Tea House earlier to claim its “poorly business operation during the epidemic.”
As one of the few remaining Chinese restaurants in the traditional style, Lin Heung Tea House allowed guests to use traditional teapots to make tea and select their food from a dim sum cart while being served by waitstaff in traditional white uniforms.
The tea house previously announced in February 2019 that it would close at the end of its lease.
However, it was successfully able to bounce back after renewing the contract in 2020, but due to the social distancing measures and the order of Prohibition on Gathering was finally forced to close down.
