Police are hunting down an "extremely dangerous" taxi passenger for murder after he slashed the neck of a 48-year-old driver in western district on Tuesday morning.
The passenger is a white man aged around 30 to 35. He is around 1.8 meters high with black hair, and donned in black T-shirt, dark shorts and dark shoes.
At around 5am on Tuesday morning, a taxi stopped at the junction of Queen's Road West and Eastern Street.
The taxi driver quarreled with his passenger. The passenger then slid his neck with a knife.
The driver got out for the car and fled along Queen's Road West. The westerner chased after him, but when the driver fell some 20 meters away he fled.
A passerby found the driver and called the police. He was sent to hospital and certified dead at 6.17am.
Police said there was a 7-centimeter wound on the driver's right neck. The wound was one to two centimeters deep. The driver bled a lot, and the wound could have caused his death.
He did not lose any valuables.
The suspect went along Eastern Street into Mui Fong Street. At a public toilet there, he threw away the evidences including blood-stained masks and a towel.
The police dog unit and government laboratory officers arrived later.
Officers searched a hotel near the area and found a backpack on its rooftop. In it they found a blood-stained mask and a 25-cm knife believed to be related to the case.
Police are investigating into the cause of the conflict and the mental status of the suspect.
They warn that the suspect is quite violent and ask the public to beware of him and make reports about his whereabouts.
As for the driver, his elder sister said he was the breadwinner of the family and fathered a son and two daughters aged 9, 13 and 18. The eldest daughter just entered Chinese University.
