Passenger ferry services between Tuen Mun and Macao, which has been suspended since January 30, 2020 owing to the pandemic, will cease formally.
Hongkong Macao Hydrofoil Company, the existing tenant of the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal, has notified the government that it would terminate the tenancy agreement and return the terminal with effect from June 8 this year.
The department said they had been working closely with the hydrofoil company on the handover arrangements to ensure a smooth and orderly returnal. It also informed the Macao maritime administration of the company’s decision.
The department pointed out that the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui and the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan have sufficient capacity to cope with the need of cross-boundary ferry passengers.
The public can use these two terminals for ferry services between Hong Kong and Macao upon resumption of cross-boundary passenger ferry services.
The newly commissioned Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Tunnel together with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge also provide an alternative for passengers travelling between Hong Kong and Macao, according to the department.
The future use of the ferry terminal will be considered after government’s assessments of public demand for water transport services and requests from ferry service operators, the department said.
