The prominent pro-democracy activist's visit to Copenhagen, Denmark since Monday already sparked speculations that he is trying to jump bail and seek political asylum in Europe.
Hui, 38, who is a Central and Western District Councilor and former lawmaker, released a statement on social media tonight, announcing that he will be on exile, quit Democratic Party and will not return to Hong Kong in the near future.
The former lawmaker told another local news paper that he had no intention to seek asylum with the Danish government.
But he reiterated that on exile is not the same as immigrating, as he said he have yet to decide which country to stay in, according to his statement.
Local media yesterday reported that Hui's parents, wife and children have already left the SAR to join Hui, whose visit to Denmark will officially end tomorrow.
Hui is currently facing multiple legal cases in Hong Kong, and is currently on bail facing multiple charges connected to a protest at Tuen Mun Park on July 6 last year.
His travelling documents were returned to him after Danish parliamentarians provided official documentations supporting his visit to Copenhagen for a climate change conference.
He was also arrested on two separate occasions under the Legislative Council (Powers and Privileges) Ordinance last month for protesting against the pro-Beijing camp in the Legislative Council chamber, including a scuffle in the chamber, and splashing foul-smelling substances in the chamber both happened earlier in May.
