Democrats demand Carrie Lam to answer questions on security law at Legco

The Democratic Party said today it has written to the Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, demanding her to fulfill her constitutional duties and attend a “special question time” at the Legislative Council to answer questions about the national security law for Hong Kong.

Yesterday, the Administration Wing said Lam will not attend as the legislation to be enacted by the National People's Congress Standing Congress is outside the limits of the SAR's autonomy and the details are yet to be publicized, so it is too early and unfeasible.

In a press briefing today, party chairman Wu Chi-wai said his party had raised urgent questions about the security law at the Legislative Council council meeting three times, but they were all rejected.

Wu criticized the government for refusing to listen to the views of lawmakers, and described the legislation as "a big stone crushes a crab to death," and that Hong Kong people are forced to accept it.

Lawmaker James To Kun-sun said according to the Basic Law, Article 23 should be enacted by the Legislative Council, and now that the NPC is enacting the security law has already violated the mini-constitution.

To also said during the legislation process, Hong Kong lawmakers cannot give opposing views, and that Legco is even worse than the NPC, as there was one vote against the plan in Beijing last month.
