Guo Pei: Fashioning Imagination at M+ showcases an innovative blend of historic Chinese craftsmanship with global and Western influences in haute couture.
The exhibit intersects fashion and contemporary visual culture featuring over 40 pieces from Guo's Rose Studio and art and design from the M+ Collections.
Curated by Ikko Yokoyama and supported by a team from M+, it is divided into five thematic sections reflecting Guo's career and design philosophy.
Each is a portal into her imaginative universe, where history, mythology, and nature coalesce. "It took more than a year, but it also happened very fast," said Yokoyama. "So I had to decide which garments I wanted to show because they are all very popular."
The Joy of Life beckons with collections like Garden of Soul and An Amazing Journey in a Childhood Dream, showcasing nature-inspired designs that burst with vibrant colors and intricate embroidery. Here, Guo's ability to encapsulate the beauty of the natural world becomes a celebration of life.
Remember how Rihanna stunned the world at the Met Gala with The Yellow Queen gown? That was from Guo's New Tales from the East collection. These pieces reinterpret cultural symbols through a modern lens.
"It was an absolutely extraordinary experience,' said Guo.
"I remember when I was packing the gown, it weighed 25 kg. It was so heavy, and I wondered how Rihanna could wear it. But when she tried it on and eventually wore it at the event. That was the moment that the world knew it was made by a Chinese designer."
Transcending Space delves into architecture as a muse, with collections like Legends and L'Architecture, inspired by European architectural styles and religious imagery. Guo's designs reflect a dialogue between structure and fluidity, merging the rigidity of architecture with the grace of haute couture.
Ethereal Mythologies invites you to explore mystical themes through collections like Legend of the Dragon and Elysium. Cultural symbols are placed alongside natural beauty. to create a world where dreams and reality intertwine.
Finally, On Dreams and Reality reflects on the cyclical nature of life with collections such as Samsara and Encounter. "When I create my work, it is the feeling deep that drives me," Guo said. "It may come from a fairy tale I read or music, or clothing displayed in a museum."
The designs in this section challenge conventional materials and forms, embodying a philosophy of regeneration and rebirth.
"Many of my designs were finished in one go," she said. "A good example is the Samsara collection."Guo's work is presented alongside pieces from the M+ Collections, creating a dialogue across cultures and media. The exhibition underscores her influence in both the fashion world and contemporary visual culture.
