A District Services and Community Care Team in Kowloon City has reported a suspected hack of its instant messaging app account, potentially leaking the personal data of 23 service users.
The Kowloon City District Office said on Wednesday it received a report from the Homantin Residents Association, the contractor for the Sheung Lok team. The breach may have exposed users' names, phone numbers, and addresses, including the full or partial identity card numbers of seven individuals.
The contractor has reported the incident to police and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, and has notified all affected users to be vigilant. It is reviewing and will enhance security measures.
The Kowloon City District Office apologized for the inconvenience and has set up a hotline (2712 9182) for inquiries. It reminded the public that care teams will not proactively ask for bank account numbers and that members wear uniforms and carry identification during duties.
The office has written to the team, urging increased vigilance, strengthened security, and strict adherence to guidelines on handling personal data. The Home Affairs Department has also reminded all care teams.
