The incident came to light after a veterinarian at a clinic on Kiu Kiang Street reported the injury on Tuesday.
Police took statements from the puppy's female owner, surnamed Choi. They also sought assistance from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
The injured puppy, estimated to be between three and six months old, was brought to the veterinarian by Choi, who identified a fracture in its right hind paw.
Choi explained that the injury occurred after her husband allegedly threw the puppy into a corner, causing the fracture. She reported to police that her husband, a 50-year-old man surnamed Sze, had dropped the dog onto the ground.
Following a preliminary investigation, officers arrested Sze at his residence on suspicion of animal cruelty.
He denied the charges, claiming he was helping the injured dog when it jumped from the bed and accidentally fell to the ground.
It was also revealed that Sze and Choi are currently undergoing divorce procedures. Choi has been caring for the puppy since October last year, having received it from a friend.
Sze remains in custody as investigations continue. The case has been handed over to the Sham Shui Po Police District's animal crime team for further follow-up.
