The Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show 2026 opened at AsiaWorld-Expo on Friday, launching a three-day event featuring elite show jumping, youth competitions, and lifestyle entertainment, drawing dignitaries and crowds to celebrate the Year of the Horse.
The event, running through February 1, highlights top international equestrian talent alongside family-friendly activities, solidifying its place in Hong Kong's sports scene.
A vibrant opening ceremony included a lion dance sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, welcoming key officials such as Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Cheuk Wing-hing, representatives from the Liaison Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law.
During the ceremony, Cheuk emphasized the show's role as a showcase of equestrian sports and entertainment, spotlighting regional young talent through the Hong Kong Jockey Club Asian Youth Challenge and boosting Hong Kong's reputation for major events.
Organizer Richard Ireland expressed excitement about the return, noting the expanded program with new competitions and experiences that reflect the city's dynamic spirit, while thanking sponsors like Longines, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and others for their support.
Simon Brooks-Ward, from the equestrian management team, highlighted the show's status on the global calendar, focusing on high-level competition, horse welfare, and rider performance in a world-class arena.
Lester Huang, president of the show and deputy chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, described Hong Kong as a hub for international sports, crediting the club's role in horse sports development, volunteers' efforts, and the government's M-mark designation.
Martin Liao, chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, noted the club's honor as a strategic partner, viewing the five-star competition as a fitting start to the Year of the Horse and part of celebrations honoring human-horse bonds.
He praised local athletes' development through club funding and the aftercare program for retired racehorses.
The first day's evening session featured the debut of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Asian Youth Challenge, a one-star inter-Asia show jumping event for riders aged 14-18, involving challenging rounds and jump-offs to display emerging talent.
Visitors enjoyed the inaugural Airport Authority Hong Kong Dog Agility Competition, where skilled dogs demonstrated speed and agility, delighting audiences with unexpected excitement.
The international five-star action began with the Longines Welcome Stakes, where global riders vied for the fastest clear rounds, drawing on their experience from past competitions.
Crowds were thrilled by the Shetland Pony Grand National, with young jockeys racing pint-sized ponies over a demanding course. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Musical Ride showcased precise dressage to music, adding elegance.
Beyond sports, the Lifestyle Shopping Village offered immersive experiences, and a live performance by Ian Chan of MIRROR is set to enhance the entertainment lineup on February 1.
