MTR Corporation announced on Monday that the Metro Trains West Consortium, its joint venture with a subsidiary of CRRC Corporation Limited, has secured the main contract for train supply, operations, and maintenance for the Sydney Metro West project in New South Wales, Australia.
The 24-kilometer underground railway, which will feature nine stations, is set to connect Parramatta — a major commercial and residential hub in western Sydney — with the city center. The line is scheduled to commence service in 2032.
While the New South Wales government will oversee the construction of the rail infrastructure, the Metro Trains West Consortium will be responsible for a range of tasks during the delivery phase.
These include supplying next-generation driverless metro trains, signaling systems, communications and control systems, as well as system integration, testing, and commissioning.
The consortium will also take charge of operations and maintenance once the line becomes operational.
David Tang Chi-fai, MTR’s property and international business director, said the company’s global experience positions it well to deliver the project.
“By partnering with CRRC — one of the world’s foremost suppliers of rolling stock — we will deliver world-class systems and operational solutions for this line, connecting new communities and helping drive the city forward,” he said.
Wang Feng, vice president of CRRC Corporation, also expressed confidence in the partnership, citing the company’s experience in developing advanced driverless metro systems in China and overseas.
“Our experience and close partnership with MTR give us the confidence to successfully deliver this project and exceed its expectations,” he said.
