Ashley Westwood has left his role as Hong Kong football team head coach with immediate effect, the Football Association of Hong Kong, China announced on Monday, ending a turbulent 15-month tenure that ended in bitter disappointment.
The Association stated that they had reached a mutual agreement for the departure and thanked Westwood for his efforts and wished him well, confirming an open recruitment process for a permanent successor while promising to name an interim coach shortly to ensure the team’s continued development.
The 48-year-old Englishman departs just days after last Tuesday’s 1-2 home defeat to Singapore at Kai Tak Stadium, which cost Hong Kong a place in the 2027 Asian Cup final tournament.
Despite leading the team to 10 wins in 20 matches and a 50 percent win rate, Westwood’s in-game management came under fierce criticism, particularly his late substitutions and reliance on veteran naturalized players over younger local talent.
The loss proved the final straw for many supporters and pundits. Former Hong Kong striker Chan Siu-ki openly questioned the tactics during live commentary, while Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui posted on social media that the gap between fan expectations, including her own, and the coach’s decisions required serious reflection.
Westwood, a Manchester United youth product who spent most of his coaching career in India and briefly led Afghanistan before a pay dispute, had earlier been labelled the “doesn’t-care-about-fans coach” after comments suggesting he paid little attention to public opinion.
In his final statement, Westwood said, “The disappointment of not qualifying for the Asian Cup is something I have to live with, and nobody is hurting more than me. Seeing Kai Tak full of amazing fans, seven straight wins, record attendances, and a united region are memories I’ll never forget.”
