Hong Kong's star racehorse Ka Ying Rising, ridden by jockey Zac Purton, achieved a monumental victory at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse in the prestigious 1200-meter Group 1 The Everest, the world's highest-prize-money turf race.
This triumph marked a historic milestone, as Ka Ying Rising became the first Hong Kong horse to claim the title, breaking the long-standing dominance of Australian horses in the elite competition.
The win showcased the exceptional prowess of Hong Kong’s racing talent on the global stage, further solidifying Ka Ying Rising's reputation as a world-class sprinter.
At just five years old, Ka Ying Rising, trained by David Hayes, added a staggering A$7 million (HK$35.84 million) to its career earnings with this victory, pushing its total prize money to nearly HK$104 million.
This achievement elevated the horse to become the fifth in Hong Kong racing history to surpass the HK$100 million mark in earnings.
With an extraordinary record of 15 wins and two second-place finishes in 17 races, including a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive victories, Ka Ying Rising holds the highest international rating among sprint horses worldwide.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club broadcasted The Everest and other races from the same day, with The Everest alone generating a record-breaking betting turnover of HKD$99.16 million, the highest ever for an overseas race broadcast in Hong Kong.
Despite Hong Kong's small share of the global horse population—representing just 0.7 percent with around 1,200 horses—the city continues to produce world-class champions.
Following last season's success with Romantic Warrior, Ka Ying Rising's international triumph further enhances Hong Kong's reputation as a hub of elite horse racing.
The victory is expected to draw more international visitors to Hong Kong's racecourses, eager to experience the city's world-renowned racing culture firsthand.
