As the Legislative Election nomination period approaches on October 24, speculation is swirling that Vivian Kong Man-wai, the city’s Paris Olympics women’s épée gold medalist, may enter the race for a geographical constituency seat, potentially boosting voter turnout with her star power.
Kong, aged 31, made history by winning Hong Kong’s first Olympic fencing gold at the 2024 Paris Games before retiring from professional sports to join the Hong Kong Jockey Club as an assistant manager in external affairs.
Since then, she has been active in public engagements, including speaking at a Hong Kong National Security Law seminar in June and taking on roles such as a member of the Youth Development Commission and a standing committee member of the All-China Youth Federation in July.
Political circles are abuzz with rumors that Kong is eyeing a seat in the New Territories North West constituency, where she could challenge incumbent legislators from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong and the Roundtable, potentially facing off against veteran lawmaker Holden Chow Ho-ding.
Political observers suggest that the upcoming election aims to increase voter engagement, with competitive races expected across all ten of Hong Kong’s directly elected constituencies, each likely featuring four to five candidates to generate excitement.
While Kong lacks experience in grassroots political work, her high profile as an Olympic champion could appeal to voters seeking fresh faces, especially as several seasoned politicians are reportedly stepping back.
Her candidacy is seen as a potential draw to energize the electorate and elevate turnout, aligning with efforts to rejuvenate the Legislative Council with younger candidates.
