Public disbelief as ghastly new bench faces away from Victoria Harbour views

A newly installed wooden bench along the Hung Hom Promenade has sparked widespread criticism online, with many residents dismissing its unusual design as both impractical and unattractive.  

A recently unveiled bench on Hung Hom Promenade—long, brown, and stretching dozens of meters in a curving shape—has become the target of public mockery and frustration. 

Online commentators have compared its appearance to an earthworm or even to less flattering fecal references.

While aesthetic appreciation remains subjective, many have also raised practical concerns. 

The bench stands nearly one meter high, effectively blocking the waterfront view for those seated or standing nearby. Its irregular form means much of its length is unusable. 

Perhaps the most puzzling aspect is the fact that the seating side faces away from the harbor – leaving the Victoria Harbour view at the back of anyone who attempts to sit.

The bench is part of a broader revitalization project for the Hung Hom waterfront, first outlined in a 2021 government proposal submitted to the Legislative Council. 

The project aimed to upgrade the area with features such as fitness stations, pathways, rain shelters, lawns, and “specially designed seating,” intended to allow residents to “enjoy the panoramic view of Victoria Harbour.” 

The total budget for renewal was approximately HK$260 million, which also covered the addition of basketball courts and outdoor fitness equipment.

Early conceptual drawings of the promenade included designs for the now-controversial bench, though the public reaction suggests the execution may not have met residents’ expectations or needs.
