The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has issued a public alert regarding a concerning rise in fraudulent activities where scammers are impersonating its senior executives and prominent market commentators.
These fraudsters are employing sophisticated tactics such as phishing emails and forged documents to deceive members of the public.
According to the regulator, one prevalent method involves fraudsters posing as Christopher Wilson, the SFC’s Executive Director of Enforcement.
These individuals send deceptive emails that urge recipients to respond promptly or click on embedded links. The objective is to infect the devices of responsive targets with malware or ransomware.
In another observed scheme, scammers have impersonated Andrew Wan Chi-yiu, the SFC’s Chief Financial Officer.
They contact individuals under the pretense of conducting a "data verification process," attempting to illicitly obtain personal contact information.
The SFC emphasized that these criminals frequently use email domains designed to mimic the Commission’s official domain closely.
Examples of these deceptive addresses include “@sfc.hk.slotsitesxuk.org” and “@sfc.hk.zitirxsend.com.”
The primary targets in these campaigns have included licensed corporations under the SFC’s purview and their employees.
Separately, the SFC has also become aware of scams where fraudsters impersonate well-known stock commentators.
These bad actors distribute fabricated documents falsely attributed to the SFC, leading to financial losses for some investors.
Some of these activities are suspected to be part of broader market manipulation efforts.
The SFC has firmly stated that all such communications and claims are entirely false.
It urges the public to exercise heightened vigilance when handling unsolicited messages and to verify the authenticity of any suspicious communication directly through the SFC’s official channels.
