Hong Kong Security Secretary Chris Tang Ping-keung emphasized the critical role of cross-border ports in driving regional development during high-level talks in Shenzhen on Thursday.
The discussions focused on joint checkpoint operations, smart immigration systems, and the Sha Tau Kok border redesign.
Tang led a Hong Kong delegation in a task force meeting with Shenzhen Vice Mayor Luo Huanghao to coordinate planning for boundary control points (BCPs)—key transportation hubs facilitating economic exchange between the two cities.
The security chief highlighted the ports’ strategic importance to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, stressing the need for professional planning and efficient management to enhance convenience for residents and businesses.
The delegation visited Huanggang Port’s observation tower, where Tang noted the smooth progress of its redevelopment—a project recently endorsed by Hong Kong’s Legislative Council Panel on Security.
Talks also covered the Man Kam To BCP’s transition of food inspection duties and Sha Tau Kok’s redesign to modernize infrastructure.
Tang pledged ongoing oversight to ensure timely project delivery, with flexibility to address challenges.
The meeting included representatives from the Transport and Logistics Bureau, the Northern Metropolis Co-ordination Office, the Environment and Ecology Bureau, the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, the Immigration Department, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the Architectural Services Department, and the Transport Department.
